memetic theory is a sweeping account of human evolution and culture. It all starts with this concept of mometic desire. We establish these desires that we have by modelling ourselves on other people. Memetic desire, in a sense, is actually what's allowed us to become human. But if we're not careful, it can take its places that we don't want to go.
In this episode of Infinite Loops we spoke with Luke Burgis, author of the book 'Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life'. We talk about:
- Needs vs. Desire
- The current state of social media
- 'Celebristan' and 'Freshmanistan'
- How to identify fake "experts"
- Scapegoating and Mimetic Violence
- And a LOT more!
