How to Communicate Absolute Risk to Your Patients

There is a danger to using relative risk terminology with people across all medical contexts. For example, I might tell you that your genotype is structured such that you are 4 times more likely than the average person to develop genetic disease X. If we only explain relative risk without explaining absolute risk in this scenario, the patient may walk away with a major misconception. So be on the lookout for misuse of relative risk language and be sure to communicate absolute risk when appropriate.
