Pippi Longstocking - The Japanese Version of Heidi
Miyazaki and a couple other guys, Yowichi Kitabe and Asao Takaata were working on Pippi Longstocking. They were not allowed to do it so they did Heidi instead. It's just like an interesting it bounced across the globe and then bounced back even stronger as a property. That fresh riff on it makes it even more popular where it came from.
