Hawniman was a staunch supporter of Indian's national movement for freedom. He had walked on the streets of Calcutta in Dhoti and Kurta during the Swadeshi movement against the proposed partition of Bengal. In his younger days, John Elfenstone was suspected of being close to Queen Victoria herself. During the uprising, Forget's greatest success was the arrest of two prominent leaders of a plot to destabilize Bombay.
