The Church Never Condemned Slavery, but It Used to Be OK, Right?
People who abuse one part of the church's teaching in order to justify evil actions. People look for superficial similarities between these evil practices and things that the church allowed were in principle legitimate. So you find this tendency to trade on ambiguities, both among critics of the church and among those who are trying to use the church's Teaching to justify slavery.
