When people are afraid, if they feel like they can take action and protect themselves by expressing anger, this is not necessarily a conscious thought. And we see that I think immediately with Grinch is that as soon as he walks into the town, he finds his fight part to protect his fearful hurt parts. If he keeps everyone away from him, they can't get close enough to hurt him.
