When i was a little kid, my my dad taught me what nuclear war was at a very young age. And i developed an obsession for years with armor and knights and bullet proof vests. I think all those things were just ways of insulating myself from the terrifying realities of life. The toughness that can often come from that as well rit from the feeling of trying to be a merry one.
