The historic maya could track some of these astronomical cycles, such as the lunar month. They must have done it over decades or centuries worth of observation and record keeping. At the time that these maya scholars were keeping these records, they were world leading in precision. But europeans did not respect that or appreciate that, till relatively recently right? Not only did they not appreciate the knowledge, but colonizers actually destroyed written books known as codises which detailed all this rich astronomical knowledge.
