Augustine's fascination with memory is part and parcel of his interest in self-knowledge. When we reflect on previously acquired knowledge, we are remembering what we know. And when we imagine new things, we are combining images we have experienced before. It is this willing that explains why the mind is entertaining the specific content that it has chosen.
