In 1942, the US Council on Books in War Time started sending books to American troops fighting in World War II. Over 150,000 copies of the Armed Services Edition of Gatsby were shipped overseas. By 1960, Gatsby was selling 50,000 copies a year. These days, it sells over half a million copies a year and is difficult to escape from high school English classes.
