In 1845, the rural resistance societies and most all other forms of social interaction were largely brought to a halt by a tiny agricultural virus known as Phytophthora. The potato was both a product for export and a food source that sustained the nation. For nearly a century leading up to the disaster, the economy of Ireland had been artificially engineered via more oppressive laws.
