The goal of stoic practice is not train us to grin and bear, or to bear and forbear the events of life. Instead, the goal is to learn to love them. Epictetus says we must have two things within ourselves to arrive at that place where can find loving acceptance for all of the events that occur in nature. The crucial step is the combination of determinism with providence.
