The Samaritans were seen as Jews who broke the covenant and married outside of the covenant. They were very much looked down upon to the point where when the people came back from exile they said, we're going to rebuild this temple so we can worship Jehovah. The Samaritan said, we want to help you too. And they were told, no, you cannot help. That's how bad this animosity is between the two groups. Jesus is the Samaritan. He does unexpected things. But he doesn't ask the same question about his neighbor that fell among the thieves.
