melvourne: I cannot imagine ancient rome as a society without slaves. As an owner, you have almost unlimited rights to deal with a recalcitrant slave as you wish. There's the assumption that they are loyal and dependent and you can trust them. All slaves are naturally lazy, rebellious. You don't take evidence from a slave unless they have been tortured. The romans simultaneously believe in the loyalty of their slaves. It's one reason why they hand over a lot of confidential, intimate information.
