Ampathy Has Its Limits
In the same way that a lifeguard, you know, he's empathic, she's empathic. She's coming for the drowning person in the pool. But if the drowning person starts to fight the life guard, the lifeguards will back off and allow them to go under. We don't drown in other people's sorrow by making sure we ourselves are also empatically connected with others. Others can also teach us, through their ampathy with us, what those limits are like. And it youre not in agreement with me about this, then you're not trully being empathic. Being empathic enables you to be more calm, less anxious, and therefore thoughtful.
