In the future, surface ships are going to be very vulnerable to long range missile attack. It depends on how much damage the ship can take. If you hit a carrier on the deck with a conventional explosive, you will do significant dam but you won't sink the carrier. The carriers got a lot of emin unless it's badly managed. And that's probably what happend with the muska. I'm just guessing the maintenance of the ship was so poor, and the damaged control skill s of the of the crew were so poor, that they couldn't keep the ship from sinking.
