The Anyons and the Anyon Theory
In certain states of matter, electrons actually decay into smaller particles that have a fraction of the electron charge. When you have these fractions of electrons, they have the feature that when you have an electron that goes around another electron, the wave function gets a minus sign. That's what's opened up this whole field of anyons and finding that many states of two-dimensional matter support those kinds of emergent particles.
