The Myth of Artemis

Artemis' most well-known story involving revenge against a male involves Action, as this was a favorite in both ancient and Renaissance depictions. The details may vary, but they all have the same core and the same results. There's Artemis wants sex only to be a part of adulthood and attached to a proper marriage. In Euripides's play Hippolytus, which we discussed in episode 52, Artemis' desire to protect conflicts with Aphrodite's pull on the young son of Theseus. This greatly angers Aphrodite, since she wanted him to worship her instead by engaging in sexual desires that leads to his death.
