Achieving the Office of Overseer
The overseer is called to act as god's steward in his household. He must not be a recent convert or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. It is imperative that candidates for such an office be of very good reputation. Above any reproach, they are to be judged by their households. In a deeply perverse and pagan society like crete's, his household needs to be a model household. If his children do not respect his authority, if they are insubordinate, his ability to lead the church will be compromised.
