The History of the Zibatsu in Japan

The Zibatsu were allowed to restructure and greatly weakened, but very familiar, forms as keretsu. This was permitted for two main reasons: America's idealistic vision for a democratic and progressive Japan took a back seat in the 40s and 50s. The second important and kind of surprising reason was that almost no one in Japan really wanted to see the Zibatsu broken up. In fact, at 1.15,000 Matsushta union workers signed a petition demanding that the Matsushta Zibatsu not be broken up.
