Women's Education in Cambridge

There wasn't a concerted effort from a group of women. They were just seen as doing a nice thing for middle class young ladies. The difficulties did come in the 1890s when, as one professor said, it was all very well when they came here for general cultivation, but now they want to come here for professional purposes. That's a different matter entirely because they'll be vying with us for our places. So again, it's a male elite in this case, realising that the women could do as well as or better than the men in classics and mathematics.
