In a lot of cultures, there's the expectation that I can do something that will impact someone who has already died. That thinking is that in order to help care for my ancestors, I can be baptized on their behalf. It then imputes upon them what we all studied before or not. Is Paul actually endorsing baptism on behalf of the dead, or is he just citing it as an example of, well, if there's no resurrection, then why are people baptized for the dead?
