Is the Past Perfective a Type of Perfective?

The main thing of a perfective is that you are looking at the action as a single event. In Greek narrative, background information is given in the imperfective and then the events you care about are in the perfective. Is the pretebrate a type of perfective? I have no idea because what people call the pretered from language language language, it's almost a question.
