The Importance of Existential Holism in the Life of a Person
The trouble with artificial intelligence is that computers don't give a damn. John Houghlin, a very important philosopher and cognitive scientist who taught at the University of Chicago until he died very untimely was famous for saying this. A single speech act cannot be embarrassing, shameful, irresponsible, or foolish in isolation. Only a being that cares about who it is as some sort of enduring whole can care about guilt or folly, self respect or achievement, life or death. This wholeism now, not even apparently in the text, but manifestly in the reader I call existential holism.
