Taiwan's position in the chip industry creates what they call the silicon shield. The idea being that it would be too expensive for anyone to disrupt the chip supply coming out of Taiwan and therefore no one will do so. It's also the case that Taiwan's chip production guarantees that the US is interested in ensuring ongoing good relations between the US and Taiwan, he says.
