The Roman Republic Is Not the Marble of the Senate, It Is the Sands of the Colosseum

The Roman Republic was never really formally abolished. It's likely the senators of that time would have still spoken of the Roman Republic as if it was still a thing that existed. This view of the Roman populace as mindless bloodthirsty riffraff unfortunately remains the anti-people's history pervade by both entertainment media and many classical scholars. And I do want to add as a personal note, the not that I dislike Ridley Scott's film in terms of its overall construction. But I wouldn't look to it for historical accuracy.
