Poland's Transition to a Free Market Economy
Poland was part of what we called the Eastern Bloc, which is a group of communist countries around the world. The most powerful Communist Party, the one in Moscow, pulled most of the strings, particularly in the energy sector. In 1991 Poland began its shift towards becoming a democratically elected, independent country for the first time in decades. This is when coal became much more than just a patriotic symbol for Poland. It also became a symbol of energy independence, self-sufficiency and capitalism.
