Shackleton's Adventures on Elephant Island
The men left behind on elephant island made more durable shelters out of the boats and whatever else they could salvage. They stuffed those up with a torn up sleeping bag every day they would stow their equipment so that they would be ready to leave if rescue arrived. A lot of them became increasingly ill, and some had injuries that were truly dire. The stretch of ocean they needed to cross was notoriously stormy. At one point, they were nearly capsized by a wave so big that shackleton mistook its foamy crest for a break in the clouds.
