The Mongol Empire and the Russian Empire
The Mongols conquered Russia in the 13th century. The Slavic peoples and the Russians fell under what they call the Mongol yoke. It's by the 1480s or so that the Russians were able to throw off the Mongol occupation. That's when you had the great principality of Moskowi that became a genuine power. And then from the 16th century onwards, the Russians started expanding eastwards. By the mid-19th century, they had taken over all of Alaska.
