The Role of Race in Slavery

I just wanted to know where the line of causality was. Do you understand slavery as producing racial ideologies or do you have race thinking as legitimizing and opening up the door to slavery? I think that would be the strong version of the argument. The other way, which is still compatible with my general approach, is to say that people might come to accept the rule of slave owners, but in the end that's simply a consequence of the fact that they have no ability to challenge slave owners. So it's a rationalization of their domination. It does no independent explanatory work. It's just the kind of mediating cause between their powerlessness and the stability of the world.
