Oliver Cromwell died in 1658, leaving the title of Lord Protector to his third son Richard. The problem with Richard is he's got no real military pedigree and has spent most of his life on the sidelines. Parliament and the army begin to feud, and neither group will heed him. In the spring of 1659, Martin Bennett tells us a military coup forces Richard to abdicate.
