Gavin does not appear to understand how doctrinal development works. He says that the veneration of icons can't be an example of a U-turn because it would be a reversal of direction. We see this type of doctrinal development in Scripture itself, he writes. Gavin goes through the historical evidence to show that opposition to icon veneration was universally or resoundingly attested in the early church.
