The Freedman's Bureau and the South

Freedman's bureau was created by Congress in 1865 to help freed people build their new lives. It would open nearly 3000 schools helping more than 150,000 black southerners learn how to read and write. The agency also took responsibility for negotiating labor contracts between freed people and employers settling disputes Ensuring equal justice and protecting black people from white hostility and violence were among its most difficult tasks. By the end of 1864 there were never more than 900 bureau agents across the entire south.
