Russia and Ukraine both root the foundation of their nations to Crimea. For Russia it's particularly important because of that Christian civilization that begins there. It's also important I think for Russia in a more modern context because it's a place where so many people in the Soviet Union went on holiday. If this war gets to become a sort of fight over Crimea itself, Putin would probably resort to tactical nuclear weapons if he's exhausted all other escalatory measures he can still take.
