Once she was equipped with a doctorate Sofia returned to Russia hoping to secure an academic position. The best the Russian government could offer her was teaching fairly elementary mathematics at a woman's college. She enjoyed the life of higher society in St Petersburg meeting many people, also enjoyed the fame because progress is circles knew a lot about her and we're proud of things she had achieved already. Also she became closer to her husband Kowalevsky and they sort of became more like a family.
