Cigarette smoke stimulates the release of more protease team members. Oxidants are found in both cigarette smoke and some mediators released from those pesky inflammatory cells. This is bad news because it can lead to further inactivation of the anti proteases, stimulation of mucous production and amplification of the inflammatory processes. Patients will get airflow obstruction and air trapping or hyperinflation. And then finally we might see pulmonary hypertension. It's pretty much the only vaguely intelligent thing that I've got to offer a little bit later on in the episode.
