The flowers have a really cool thing going for them. Most of them are proto-gyness or pro-togenous, as Tom Croat says, that is their female first. They're bisexual inforacences. And the flowers are functionally-pistulate, like a female first and then later become staminate. This of course is to avoid self-pollination, excuse me, and to encourage cross-pollination. It's just what made the most sense and what has made it through the filter of evolution.
