The Effects of Labral Tears on MRI

The acetabular labrum is a cartilage that runs around the outside of the rim of the socket. It doesn't really bear much load but it helps to entrain lubricating fluid throughout the hip joint in an even manner. Labral tears are common on MRI scans, but they're actually more like fraying rather than breaking apart or ripped up. There's usually an underlying degenerative change within the labrum itself which can be seen during surgery.
