The Skidian Campaign
Gobrius advised Arise to sneak away in the middle of the night back to the Danube without the Skidians knowing it. They would accomplish this by lighting their campfires as usual and leaving behind a contingent of their weakest soldiers with all of their donkeys, so that they would continue to make noise. And so Darius thought this was good advice and carried out this plan. Since the Persians were unfamiliar with the roads, if you can call them that, the Skidian were able to take shortcuts and reach the Danube before the Persians. Meanwhile, the other Skidian division had already arrived at the Danube. They offered a large payment to the Ionian Greeks
