Why the World's Second-Biggest Superpower Shouldn't Build Many Aircraft Carriers?
By the end of World War II, all major powers were scrambling to build aircraft carriers. Many nations' fleets now become battle groups designed to protect and assist them. The Soviets never really went that far down this path, instead focusing more on cruises and submarines for the Soviet fleet. And it's the same kind of principle that you see going back hundreds and hundreds of years. If a nation is primarily a land-focused nation, then their fleet, if they have it at all, will only really consist of coastal defence craft. They're not supposed to be sitting there controlling the ocean.
