The greater the number of men who confessed to plotting with Trotsky for every crime imaginable and several that were objectively unimaginable, the greater Stalin looked in comparison. The confessions also served a further purpose, scapegoating for the ongoing and enormous economic hardships. But there's a parallel here and I don't like making this parallel because it's like pure evil versus largely good.
