The Best Advice Is Just Take Responsibility, You Know?
You're taking more risk by keeping your coins in someone else's possession, you're now subject to their permission. You're at a much greater risk of being censored. At least with the hot wallet, it's like you're responsible for that. And I highly recommend just starting with small amounts and working your way up until you're more comfortable with this stuff and understand it better.
