Beshar al-asad is the son of former Syrian dictator hafez al- asad. He took power after his father's death in June 2011 and quickly assumed power. The young despot was a high strung, paranoid scared guy who didn't want to be president at first because he feared getting murdered. His regime has been dubbed "the damascus spring" by some media commentators.
