The Death of a Vampire
Mr. Herbert claims to have killed Robert Arden with a wooden stake and set him alight before fleeing the scene. He believes that vampires are very rare and feed only infrequently, as all evidence he has seen points to their feeding being fatal. If there were many vampires or if they ate often the number of disappearances would quickly become noticeable to the rest of society. The vampire population seems far too small for this to be a possibility. There is substantial evidence to support the version of events told by Mr. Herbert in all aspects except the vampirism.
