I don't think they had the context for a more ancient past. I just don't think that that was a possibility of the name in the head. It's only now, because we've had the concept of cataclysm being proven out that we can explore those concepts a bit. The idea that as technology beyond that or it was a civilization that wasn't them, it was older isn't really a concept that ever gets explored or even thought about. That's him. He's looking at the evidence and he's trying to like frame a solution based on what they know of the dynastic Egyptians. But at the same time,. you can always see him like scratching his head thinking about it
