White Pine - The King of the American Lumber Industry
Millions of white pines over a hundred feet tall lorded over these vast forests and they were kings of America's lumber industry too. White pine grew quickly, reaching over 50 feet tall within half a century and could continue to grow to over 200 feet tall in as many years if left undisturbed. The American heartland could never have developed without tapping into this critical conduit of northern white pine. As the Chicago based magazine Northwestern Lumberman wrote in 1880 quote, Every new settler upon the fertile prairies means one more added to the vast army of lumber consumers.
