Englishness was the center of the idea of civilization. All the way from India to Australia to South Africa, the assumption always was that if you want colonial people to understand the colonizer, the key is language and culture. And they had to believe in Englishness then. Oh, and Englishness was at the center, quite powerful. Yeah.
