Pragmatic Inference: A New Approach to Search
The principal of Pragmatics is like, what could somebody have said if they had wanted a particular thing? What are other things they could have said and what goals would have been consistent with that? And so in some sense, something as simple as TFIDF, information retrieval and many different search algorithms will follow some of those basic principles. But then the question is: Are they effectively doing that in communicative context in the way you would want? Large language models do get some pragmatic tasks, especially the bigger ones.
