Is Consciousness Evolving in Gradients in Smooth Increments or Something Akin to Quanta?

In evolutionary biology what we very often see is a lot of gray areas. We cannot define, we cannot define things there very clearly but this is to some extent the joy of it. So my tendency is to concentrate on the gray areas because they are very interesting. I do realize that there are fresh old effects too in evolution. But one, you know too little about it. One, you don't want to get into an argument with someone who doesn't understand your point of view. You're not going to be able to answer every question so why bother?
