How Do You Write in Silence?

Inlander: I sit down quite early, give myself short assignments and reward myself when i've finished a tough paragraph or passage. No music, no noise. You write in the silence. And you have to let the critical guy be the ethical consultan ad let him go back to the library and read a book and wait patiently. The mind is constantly going to tell you there's not really a very effective or efficient reason for you to write this. That's what my ri students are up against constantly. So i think i could help you with your novel, if you really want to give it a try.

Lamott has been honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship and has taught at UC Davis and writing conferences across the country. She is an inductee of the California Hall of Fame and the subject of Academy Award-winning filmmaker Freida Mock’s documentary Bird by Bird with Annie (1999).
